Copywriting Without Experience:

Copywriting

So you wanna become a copywriter. My question is, why? Why do you wanna become a copywriter? Is it because you know that copywriting is one of the most high-demanding professions in today’s world? That it is a profession that doesn’t require a college degree or a lot of capital to get started? Or is it because you know that it is a skill, copywriting is a skill that could make you comfortable six-figure income working from home or anywhere in the world?

That it is a skill that once you master, you could write your own destiny. Regardless, today I’m gonna give you three tips. It doesn’t matter if you’re considering copywriting as a career, or you’re already a copywriter but you kinda wanna take your income to that next level. Are you ready? Tip number one: make sure that you choose one market to start off with. You see, a lot of copywriters, one of the mistakes that they make is they try to be everything to everyone. Imagine you’re sitting down with a potential client who wants to hire you for copywriting and they ask you,”So what’s you’re expertise?

“What can you write on?”What kind of topics, what kind of industries”do you focus on?”And you say, “Oh yeah, I can write for any industry.”I can write for the fitness industry.”I can write for the business industry.”I can write B2B, B2C, it doesn’t matter.”I can write them all, I can write an email, “And I can write landing pages.”You try to be everything to everyone.

A jack of all trades, master of none. When you’re getting started, it’s much better to focus on one sector, one industry. Something that you’re passionate about, something that you have an interest in. For example, let’s say if you like to exercise, that you’re interested in health. Well, focus on that, just the fitness niche. Even within the fitness niche, that is such a broad topic, a broad industry, and you just focus on, you know what? I’d like just to focus on the muscle-building part, or just to help women to lose weight diet plan from the age of 30 to 45.

I mean that specific. Choose one thing. Because the longer you’re in it, the more insights you’ll get, and the more you’ll understand your target market. This way, when a company hires you, you will have insights that you can bring to the table and say, “Hey, you know what?”I’ve been selling to this industry” for X amounts of years, for X amount of months.””I know what these customers want.”See, that is something that you can bring to the table that is very, very valuable as a copywriter.

So focus on one industry to start off with. Once you get better, you could diversify, maybe two or three within the same category. But I’d recommend sticking with one market. Tip number two on how to become a copywriter, and that is to make it easy for your prospects to say yes. You see, most copywriters, I don’t know why, some of them have such a big ego that they feel like, they haven’t done a lot, but they feel like, “Oh, I’m so special.”Look at me, I’m a copywriter, so pay me all this money.

“They ask for outrageous fees without a lot of track record to back up whatever the fees that they’re charging. Instead of doing that, what I did in my early 20s, I called that do or die copywriting. This means I would approach prospects and say, “Hey, you know what?”I know you and me, we’ve never worked together.”I know what I could do.

“I looked at your campaign, I looked at your marketing, “I looked at your letters, “I looked at whatever that you’re doing right now,” and I believe I could produce more results for you.”I’m not here to be an expense for you.”I’m here to be a revenue generator.” I want whatever you pay me, it pays for itself, “that the minute, the day that you use what I wrote for you, “it would pay for itself.”So here’s what I’m gonna do.”I’m gonna take a look at your marketing.

“Maybe it’s a letter, maybe it’s direct mail, “maybe it’s a campaign, maybe it’s a page, it doesn’t matter.”Let me re-write that for you, let me write that for you.”If you don’t like it, don’t pay me.”If you like it and you use it, then pay me X.” That’s it. I made them an offer that they cannot refuse, it’s that simple. Now listen, did I have some clients, some prospects who took advantage of me, who actually liked my stuff and didn’t pay me? Absolutely.I got a couple of those.

But I wasn’t working, I wasn’t busy anyway. It’s all practice, it’s okay, right? But as a result, I’m able to get clients, and out of those some would say, “Hey, this is great work.”I’m more than happy to hire you.” In fact, I wanna hire you on a retainer basis” so you can write for us on a monthly basis.”That’s how I got started, nothing fancy. Because I made it easy for the prospects to say yes. Tip number three, and that is to earn while you learn. You see, unlike traditional education, unlike other professions, what do you have to do?

Tell me, comment below. What do you have to do? You go through four years of college. Whatever profession, maybe five years of college, right? You go through that. You borrow money, you get into debt, student loan. Then by the time you graduate, now you’re in debt. You’ve borrowed money. Now you start earning, you get that job that you kind of want. But you’re still not earning yet because of all the debt that you’ve accumulated in school, now you’ve got to pay those off.

Only after you pay those off, who knows how many years it would take, then you start earning. Well, copywriting is not like that. That’s not what I did. When I was working for my mentor, Alan, within a year of learning from him, even when I was learning from him, I didn’t get paid a whole lot but I was earning some. As soon as I was taking on clients, I was earning while I was learning. Because you see, copywriting is not something that you just read from a book.

You can learn something from it, but you learn by doing, you learn by actually getting started, you learn by writing, working with clients, seeing what works in the marketplace, and then you will get insight, and you will get data. Hey, you know what? When I write this way, it gets this kind of response. When I write that way, it doesn’t get that kind of response. See, that’s something that no one can take away from you. That is valuable ’cause that’s your experience. But you won’t get that until you’re working with people.

So you can earn while you learn. You don’t have to wait ’til four years and then, oh my goodness, now you can start earning, no. You’re earning, and the longer you’re in it, the more you’re gonna earn, the more people will pay you, and the smarter that you’ll get. That’s exactly how it works. So in order to become a good copywriter, you’ve gotta make a decision, that this is a skill that you’re gonna master no matter what. It’s not gonna be overnight, but at the same time, it doesn’t take as along as you might think. What you need to do is to dedicate yourself and make a decision, make a decision that you wanna become the best copywriter that you could be, knowing, in your chosen market, not for everybody but just in your chosen market.
